Character:
Empress Elizabeth (1709-1762), daughter of Peter the Great, ruled Russia from 1741 until her death in 1762. She took the country into the "War of Austrian Succession" and the "Seven Year's War." She was one of the best loved Russian Monarchs, although
she spent exorbitant amounts of money and was especially taken with French fashion. She would continuously have pieces sent to her to stay up with the French mode. It has been said that she never wore the same dress twice, and, after she was dead, over 15,000 dresses and shoes were found in her closet.
Description:
This traveling style dress is made of beautiful floral brocade, typical of that century, in a paprika background. Being a Russian empress, her dress is trimmed in mink throughout and topped with embroidered beaded trim. Gold lace has been ruffled and swaged onto the petticoat with rosettes and is also seen on the bodice. Pearl pendants adorn the stomacher to show the opulence of this dress and her wealth. A matching tricorn hat has been added to show her military association, as well as a muff and mink neckpiece for her warmth and grandeur while traveling.
* The retail price for replication includes the base price of the dress and all extras shown in photo. This costume is available for "Rental" at Behind the Scenes Costume shop, info under links.
