Character:
Josephine de Beauharnais
(1763-1814) who later
married Napoleon had two
children in her first
marriage. She was a quiet
and reserved woman and
this dress represents
typical daywear that she
may have worn while strolling
through the park with
her favorite book and
dog, and, perhaps while
she was still a lady in
waiting in her younger
years.
Description:
The main fabric is an
iridescent, soft blue,
embroidered silk taffeta.
The ruching of the serpentine
on the fronts, around
the hem of the petticoat
skirt, rococo cuffs and
tulle cuffs are trimmed
with a champagne metallic
lace. Complimentary colored
silk taffeta is ruffled
on the edge as well as
serpentines over the ruching
on the overskirt and again
seen at the hem of the
petticoat and decorated
with tiny blue bows.
The bows which, embellish
the cuffs, are used as
buttons to pull up the
dress, flattering this
prominent detail in the
back of the dress. The
stomacher is arranged
of ruffles of metallic
organza which are sewn
in curved rows with braided
gimp in between. She wears
an antique brooch on her
choker around her neck.
* The retail price for replication includes the base price of the dress and all extras shown in photo. This costume is available for "Rental" at Behind the Scenes Costume shop, info under links.
