Character:
Madame de Pompadour (1721–1764)
was best known for becoming
the famous mistress of
King Louis XV of France.
She was highly intelligent,
beautiful, and educated.
In 1745 was official,
and she entered the court
of Versailles. She brought
her younger brother Marquis
Marigny with her, and
together they established
various accomplishments
within the art world.
She had many portraits
painted of her, but the
more famous of these portraits
demonstrates a life of
lushness and leisure,
while representing the
fashion from this period.
Description:
The gown is a silk taffeta
in a dusty rose with a
silver undertone. Exquisite
lace matches the color
of the taffeta creating
a very monotone feel.
Voluptuous ruffles have
been constructed from
the taffeta and lace engulfing
one another all throughout
the dress.
A taffeta swag was added
to the front of the petticoat
skirt and mimics the back
when ruched up. This tonal
pleasure of delight exhibits
the superfluous detail
in the bows and tiny organza
flowers trimming the Rococo
cuffs and stomacher.
The most enchanting feature
is the hand crafted flowers
evident on the choker
and overskirt. Each petal
is an assortment of sizes
and develops into a fascination
as only nature can produce.
But, in fact, the piece
de la resistance is the
handbag shaped and designed
to appear like a rose
bulb just waiting to be
opened; a rose constructed
from feathers adorns the
hair.
