Character:
Mary Granville Pendarves
Delany (1700-1788), as
referred in this genre,
the "Garden of Delight,"
was a creative artist
of many media. In this
time of British garden
design, her favorite pastime
was botany. One of her
great accomplishments
was reconstructing her
own garden dedicated to
her female friends for
gatherings, which became
so magnificent that other
garden enthusiasts deemed
it delightful and noteworthy.
Her skills with scissors
generated many other delightful
creations, such as a thousand
decoupages of botanical
illustrations, which is
exhibited in the British
Museum, and elaborate
embroidery designs for
court dresses. This was
my inspiration for her
dress, a Robe a'la Francaise,
which depicts of the kind
of work she would reveal.
Description:
The fabric is a delicate
pink taffeta sparsely
embroidered with stemmed
pale yellow roses. Embellished
with various flounces
and serpentine ruching,
all have been incrusted
with flower trims, silk
flowers and flower corsages
showcasing the plethora
of colors found in any
spectacular garden.
The entwining trimmings
and shapes represent the
twisting paths and spaces
she created for the female
guests of her lavish garden.
Floral embroidered lace
formulates the cuffs,
neckline, and stomacher.
"Fly fringe"
is utilized in edging
much of this detail as
well. Such extravagant
beauty, but does it surpass
the simplistic virtue
of Pierette’s graceful
design!?
* The retail price for replication includes the base price of the dress and all extras shown in photo. This costume is available for "Rental" at Behind the Scenes Costume shop, info under links.
