Character:
Pauline-Felicite de Mailly
(1712-1741) was another
mistress to Louis VX.
She was described as graceful
with a long neck and had
a great desire for money
and political influence.
She received a vast amount
of gifts from the King,
the greatest being a castle
in Choisy-le-Roi, but
soon her arrogance quickly
made her hated within
the court.
She died at a young age
while giving birth to
one of Louis VX offspring.
The costume she wears
was one from her younger
years when she was full
of life and love. She
was fantasying going sailing
and capturing pirates.
Description:
Refurbished from an existing
style, the pearls once
lining the edge inspired
a nautical theme. The
pearl colored brocade
has been brightened up
with merry colors of aqua
and amethyst. Aqua details
representing the water
is shown as: horsehair
made into bows; lace trim,
ruffled then swagged;
tiny velvet flowers lining
the edges; groupings of
oyster shells, sprayed
about; and organza ribbon
alternating with pearls
tied-up in a bow, and
tiny clam shells.
The iridescent amethyst
ribbon represents an abalone
shell, amplifying the
pleated ruffle down the
fronts of the dress, the
detail on the stomacher,
tiny bows around the hem,
and the choker worn at
her neck. Lime-green fly
trim weaves itself through
the details like winding
dead man’s finger,
(a type of seaweed), floating
in the sea.
She flaunts a tricorn
perch hat on her head
matching the detail of
her dress. Sounds like
the perfect attire for
Dames at Sea.
