Character:
Depicted from a portrait painted by Jean François de Troy in 1731, the Declaration of Love reveals the fashion worn for that day. The contouche is a style of dress which went through many stages in the 18th century as well as many versions of names. Starting out as a Manteau, from late 17th century through the earlier part of the 18th century, and later was know as the sack dress which was intensely painted by Antoine Watteau, therefore became know as the Watteau dress, which is seen today in fashionable wedding gowns. The uniqueness of the style is the large pleats that cascade down the back starting from the neckline. In this adaptation of the contouche dress it shows how in the 1740’s the waist has developed closer to the back, in addition, it utilizes other techniques and decorations supporting the latter part of the century.

Description:
The silk taffeta is a soft sage with a glimmer of silver and gold. Complimentary floral brocade has been used on the petticoat and over-skirt and outlined with serpentine ruffles from the taffeta and tulle along with pearl trim looping in between. A Valentino beaded lace has been chosen for the stomacher and rococo cuffs which inspired the rest of the pleating theme. Taffeta and brocade bows enhance the sleeves and creates the neckpiece. A drawstring handbag finishes off this ensemble with the beaded lace and ruffles and a hanging tassel at the base.

The topper is the hat. A flat style hat is faced with the brocade and encompasses the pleated taffeta, tulle and pearl trim. The crown, again, is pleated and two tails which have been brocaded and scalloped, hang off the back edge.
